What Happens During Bone Marrow Stem Cell Procedure?

At Atlas Medical Center, our providers collect bone marrow aspirate using a new proprietary device. This new device, is the only device that has been given FDA clearance to aspirate stem cells from bone marrow that requires no manipulation, is virtually painless, is the least invasive and has shown to yield the most cells (CFU’s) compared to any other bone marrow method. Atlas Medical Center is currently one of the only centers in the Metroplex using this device for extracting stem cells. While “older” devices used to perform this technique were painful, lengthy, and some required the patient to be under general anesthesia. This new device allows the procedure to be virtually painless. It requires no stitches, no hospitalization, and it requires NO downtime. It’s an outpatient procedure that allows patients to be “in an out” of our office in less than one hour offering patients a therapy with a little to no impact on their normal life. Many patients return to work or normal activity after the procedure.
First, to extract the bone marrow aspirate our providers use a LOCAL anesthetic so that the area is completely numb. Patients typically report that the ENTIRE process is almost completely painless, but some patients experience slight, minimal discomfort when being administered the anesthetic. Once the cells have been collected, the cells are then immediately injected into the injured tissue or joint using image guidance. This process is unlike any other bone marrow aspiration. There is no manipulation, no centrifugation, or chemicals added to your cells. (Stem cells are very fragile; adding chemicals,centrifuging the cells or manipulating them in any way destroys them.) Patients literally leave the office with a band-aid on their buttock, and on the area that was treated. A few patients report experiencing minimal to mild soreness that resolves 24-48 hours after the procedure.
