Spinal Decompression Therapy
Spinal Decompression for Disc and Nerve Pain in the Neck or Low Back
You don’t have to live with debilitating back pain. Spinal Decompression Therapy may be able to help you if you are suffering from: back pain due to a disc or nerve problem in your neck or lower back.
What is Spinal Decompression Therapy?
Spinal Decompression has been clinically tested and has helped thousands with disc and nerve pain in the neck and low back become pain-free. Prior to the invention of decompression therapy there was never a step between physical therapy, chiropractic adjustments and surgery. Spinal Decompression therapy has changed that! It provides patients with an effective, safe, non-surgical treatment option.
Most back and neck pain sufferers that are treated with Spinal Decompression Therapy have one of the following conditions: herniated or bulging discs, degenerated disc disease, sciatica, stenosis, pinched nerves, facet syndrome or failed back surgery.
What is important about your spine?
First, in a healthy spine, the disc which is the cushion or shock absorber sandwiched between each bone, gets its nutrients from the natural pumping motion provided by the movement of the bones above and below them. Overtime, without this natural pumping motion the discs become unhealthy, dry, and more brittle. A disc that is dehydrated gets easily damaged, torn, inflamed and more degenerated. Often times, the discs’ jelly like material bulges through the weakened outer sheath of the disc, and presses on the spinal nerve causing severe pain.
How does Spinal Decompression Therapy Work?
The advanced computerized spinal decompression system used at the Atlas Medical Center allows us to gently and precisely take the pressure off of the pain producing discs and nerves.
While the treatment is occurring, negative pressure is created inside of the disc. It has been shown that this negative pressure actually draws the herniated material back into the disc. By drawing or shrinking the bulging or herniated disc material back into the disc this also takes the pressure off of the pain producing nerves. In addition, by replicating the natural pumping motion of the spine, it has been shown that the discs rehydrate and heal themselves by allowing nutrients to get back into the disc.
Most importantly, unlike cortisone, epidural injections and medications, the results of spinal decompression therapy are often more sustainable. A study published in Anesthesiology News in 2003 found that after a four-year follow-up with patients who had undergone spinal decompression therapy 91% remained pain-free.
It is thought that the process of using Spinal Decompression forces (negative pressure) relieves pain by:
- Enlarging the disc space (which gives fluid, oxygen, and nutrition)
- Re-hydrating the disc (discs are mostly 88% water)
- Reducing bulging, protruding, or herniated discs
- Decreasing intra-discal pressure by the application of negative pressure
What Makes Atlas Medical Centers’ Spinal Decompression Program Different?
We always combine Cold Laser Therapy along with Spinal Decompression Therapy. Both therapies can provide a synergistic effect to speed up the healing process.
In addition, our Medical providers, if needed will recommend using Platelet Rich therapy with Cold Laser-Spinal Decompression Therapy. This trifecta of therapies (Cold laser, Spinal Decompression, and PRP) has the potential to provide relief from pain caused by more severe disc conditions.
